“Just kiss him already,” one of our classmates shouts. 

For a second there, I forgot we had an audience, and I’m guessing Mara did too. 

Her cheeks turn pink. And that makes something in my chest tighten. 

“It’s just a kiss," someone else calls.

My gaze never leaves Mara’s face, so I see it. The slight wince with those words. Just a kiss. 

It’s just a kiss unless she makes a big deal out of it. 

It’s just a kiss unless it’s her first kiss.

It’s just a kiss...with the one guy she can’t stand.

I should let her off the hook. Just turn around, make a joke, and let her walk away with her pride intact. 

I start to turn away, but at the same time, she lets out an exasperated sigh, “Oh, what the heck.”

That and a rousing round of applause are the only warning I get before Mara takes two steps toward me, plants her hands on my chest, bounces up on her tiptoes—and kisses me.

Heat jolts through me at the first feel of her warm, soft lips against mine.

This isn’t a kiss.

Kiss definitely isn’t the right word for it. 

This is like nothing I’ve ever felt before. It’s pure heat, and the feel of her lips on mine makes me instantly hungry, insatiable for more. It’s overwhelming and intense— especially since she hasn’t moved her lips.

At all.

She’s pressing her mouth against mine like she’s getting this over with as quickly as possible and is determined not to enjoy it.

I don’t think so. 

I wrap my arms around her waist and tug, closing the distance she’s trying to keep between us. 

If this is my one chance to kiss Mara Loman...

I’m going to do it right.
